In the United States, fuel is sold by the U.S. gallon, which equals 3.785 litres, so a price that looks "low" per gallon must be put in context once converted to litres. To make comparison with Europe easier, each price here is converted to euro per litre using the day’s EUR/USD exchange rate.
U.S. pump prices are markedly lower than French ones, mainly because fuel taxes are much lighter in the U.S. Their movements mostly track crude oil prices and the euro/dollar exchange rate, two factors that also weigh on European prices.

The gap comes mainly from taxation: fuel taxes are far lower in the U.S. than in France, where they make up a large share of the pump price.
